Newborn Baby Care – Awareness

When you are new to parenting, you may have anxiety and lots of doubts to take care of your newborn. After your pregnancy, delivery and post delivery period at hospital, you enter into the period of taking care of your baby by yourself. As, the first few months are very crucial, here are some tips to take care of a newborn at home.

Handling Newborn

– Wash your hands before handling your baby, because babies don’t have strong immune system, they are more vulnerable to get infection.

– Newborn child’s spinal system will be tender, so support baby’s head and neck while handling them every time.

– Don’t shake your babies even for playing, because shaking causes bleeding in the brain. If you want to wake up your baby, just tickle your baby’s feet or blow gently on their cheek.

– Dress your baby right. Babies cannot regulate their body temperature until they are about 6 months old.

– In general, your baby should wear the same amount of clothing as you. Don’t over bundle them, sweating can cause them to become chilled. Layers are the good way!

Feeding Your baby

Even though nursing may be natural, it is difficult for some new moms. Breast feed or bottle feed, it is recommended that babies to be fed on demand. Whenever they seem hungry, they give you a cue by crying or putting their fingers on their mouth or giving sucking noises.

Baby’s requirement

Every 2 to 3 hrs, 10 to 15 minutes at each breast or 60ml to 90ml of formula feed for each feeding.

It is always easy to monitor your baby when they are in formula feed rather than breast feed. But, it doesn’t mean that formula feed is advised! If you are having enough milk, breast milk is the best natural way for any baby.

It’s better to consult your paediatrician regarding the formula feeds. You can get Paediatric Doctor Home Visit or Specialist Consultation through Treat at Home. Download our app at Play Store, App Store or just call +9194422 22700 to book services.

Burping

If your baby tends to be gassy or seems fussy during feeding, try burping your baby after every ounce during bottle feeding and every 5 minutes during breast feeding. Always burp your baby when feeding time is over and keeping them in upright position for 10 to 15 minutes to avoid spitting up.

Burping tips

Hold your baby upright with their head on your shoulder. Support your baby’s head and back while gently patting the back with your other hand.

Bathing Basics

Sponge bath is good until the umbilical cord falls off and the navel heals completely (1 to 4 weeks). Bathing 3 to 4 times a week in the first year is fine but it depends upon the climate and geographic region. Following your paediatrician prescription is advisable.

Diapering tips

Whichever you use, either a cloth or disposable diapers, remember that your little one will dirty diapers about 10 times a day. Diaper rash are quite common, most rashes happen because the baby’s skin is too sensitive and become irritated by the wet diaper.

Sleep Pattern

Infants sleep about 16 hrs or more with the period of 2 to 4 hours. They won’t sleep whole night, the digestive system of babies are so small that they need nourishment every few hours and should be awakened if they haven’t been fed for 4 hours straight. Babies will develop own sleep patterns and cycles like adults.Try music or lullaby for aiding sleep if your baby has difficult in it even after the stomach gets full.

Lullaby tips

Lullaby not only aids sleep but also it is used for modulation of infant’s arousal, regulation of behaviour and indication of emotional intent.
